Academic Developmental Editing
Writing Coaching
I can help prepare your completed manuscript for publishing with developmental editing. We will discuss global issues, organizational principles, and align your manuscript to your target audience and intended publisher.
What is developmental editing?
Developmental editing is the stage in the book editing process that involves an editor's thorough evaluation of an author's manuscript to prepare it for publishing, including assessments related to the focus of the text and alignment to the target audience and significant structuring (or restructuring) of the manuscript.
Copyediting
Improve and finesse your manuscript’s prose and narrative thread with sentence-level and structural interventions with my copyediting services. I offer different levels of copyediting based on your needs and goals.
Below is a broad description of the different types of copyediting. Based on your needs, we will decide together on the best combination of editing level and support for your manuscript.
Basic Copyediting
Focuses on correcting surface-level errors like spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. Example: Fixing typos or ensuring the text adheres to a specific style guide (like APA, MLA, or Chicago).
Ensures consistency in style, tone, and formatting (e.g., headings, lists).
Does not delve deeply into content clarity or structure.
Medium Copyediting
Goes beyond basic corrections by addressing sentence structure and overall readability.
Ensures clear expression of ideas, removing redundancy or vague wording.
Checks for more in-depth consistency, such as maintaining proper terminology or cross-references.
May involve minor rewording for clarity but doesn’t extensively rewrite content.
Heavy Copyediting
Includes all elements of medium editing but involves substantial rewriting or reorganization to improve clarity and flow.
Addresses issues with logic, structure, and coherence of arguments or narratives.
Provides more detailed comments or suggestions for improving content accuracy or addressing gaps.
Often suited for manuscripts, academic papers, or documents needing significant refinement.
Proofreading
The final stage in the editing process, performed after all substantive editing is complete.
Focuses on catching any remaining errors (e.g., typos, formatting issues, overlooked grammatical mistakes).
Does not involve rewriting or major changes; it ensures the document is polished and publication-ready.
Strategize and plan your writing projects to ensure timely completion and to establish sustainable writing habits and practices. We will discuss writing plans, time management, and establish milestones for accountability and sustainable productivity.
